LEARN TO SEW: Sewing Machine Basics | Virtual Course with Live Check-Ins

Join us for Sewing Machine Basics (Virtual), a 2-week course designed to give you a clear, working understanding of your sewing machine. This class is ideal for true beginners or those who need a refresher. Instruction is delivered through step-by-step video lessons, with weekly check-ins for questions, guidance, and support. Topics include machine setup, threading, winding a bobbin, stitch settings, and sewing basic seams.

Instruction focuses on universal sewing machine functions that apply across brands and models, with support available during weekly check-ins for machine-specific questions. Students should have a working sewing machine at home and access to their machine manual.

By the end of the course, you will feel comfortable setting up and using your machine with confidence.

You’ll Learn How To:

  • Thread your machine and wind a bobbin with ease
  • Navigate basic machine settings 
  • Achieve consistent seam allowances 
  • Sew straight, curved, and corner seams
  • Identify fabric grain + selvages
  • Cut and pin fabrics using various cutting tools
  • Finish seams + pressing technique

Class Format:

  • This 2-week virtual course is completed from home using step-by-step video lessons. 
  • You will work at your own pace each week and join a weekly check-in session for questions, guidance, and support. 
  • All practice is done independently, with instruction provided throughout the course.
  • Three live check-in sessions (Thursdays 7:30pm-8:15pm) will be held throughout the course for questions, guidance, and support. Sessions are scheduled at key points during the course (beginning, midpoint, and completion) and will be recorded for replay. Attendance is optional.

This course combines the best of both worlds: the flexibility of learning on your time and the support of a community cheering you on. Taught by Jen Taylor, founder of Thimble Bee’s Sewing School with over a decade of in-person teaching experience, this course is created to meet you right where you are — and guide you every step of the way.

Learn To Sew: LINED TOTEBAG | Virtual with Live Check-Ins

Join us for the Learn To Sew: Lined Totebag , a 4-week course where you will create the Pepin Tote Bag by Noodlehead Patterns from start to finish while continuing to build foundational sewing skills. This class is suited for newer sewists; students should have either taken our Sewing Machine Basics course or feel comfortable threading a machine and sewing a straight seam. Instruction includes working with a pattern, cutting fabric, interfacing, and assembling a lined tote with pockets.

Please Note: Students who have previously taken Learn to Sew II are welcome to take this class again and will have the option to complete their tote with a zipper closure. New students will complete their tote using a magnetic snap closure.

Throughout the course, you will build confidence in reading and following a sewing pattern while continuing to develop core sewing techniques. Instruction is delivered through step-by-step video lessons, allowing you to work at your own pace each week. You will complete your project at home with guidance provided throughout the course.

  • Three live check-in sessions will be held throughout the course for questions, guidance, and support. Sessions are scheduled at key points during the course (beginning, midpoint, and completion), and recordings will be provided for those unable to attend live. Attendance is optional.
  • All instruction is delivered through the course lessons, with check-ins designed to support your progress and answer questions along the way.

Learn To Sew: Zipper Bags | Virtual with Live Check-Ins

Join us for Intro to Zippers: Cosmetic Bag (Virtual), a focused workshop where you will learn to install a zipper while creating a lined cosmetic bag from start to finish. This class is suited for newer sewists; students should have either taken our Sewing Machine Basics course or feel comfortable threading a machine and sewing a straight seam. Instruction includes zipper installation, working with lining, and clean finishing techniques.

Throughout the course, you will build confidence in sewing zippers and continue developing core sewing skills that can be applied to future projects. Instruction is delivered through step-by-step video lessons, allowing you to work at your own pace from home.

By the end of the workshop, you will have a completed cosmetic bag and a clear understanding of how to confidently sew a zipper.

Class Format:

This virtual workshop is completed from home using step-by-step video lessons. You will work at your own pace as you follow along and construct your cosmetic bag.

A live check-in session will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7:30–8:15 PM EST for questions, guidance, and support. Attendance is optional, and a recording will be provided for those unable to attend live.

All instruction is delivered through the course lessons, with the live sessions designed to support your progress and answer questions along the way.
